Getting a smart meter installed is a straightforward process. Once you’ve signed up for a smart meter, Octopus Energy will schedule an installation appointment at a time that’s convenient for you. A trained engineer will come to your home, remove your old meter, and install the new smart meter. The installation typically takes about 1-2 hours, and the engineer will ensure everything is working correctly before they leave. You’ll also receive guidance on how to use the in-home display (IHD) that comes with your smart meter, which shows your real-time energy usage.

How to Read Your Smart Meter
Reading your smart meter is easy, especially with the in-home display (IHD) that comes with it. The IHD shows your energy usage in real time, so you can see exactly how much energy you’re using at any given moment. It displays both electricity and gas usage, and you can view daily, weekly, or monthly summaries. If you ever need to take a manual reading, simply locate the smart meter (usually in a cupboard or on an external wall) and follow the instructions provided. However, since the meter sends readings automatically, manual readings are rarely necessary.
